SAGD Development Project

BlackPearl Resources Inc. (BlackPearl) has received regulatory approval for the proposed Blackrod SAGD Development Project (Project), an in situ Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) bitumen recovery project in the Lower Grand Rapids Formation.

The proposed project will be developed in three phases over an estimated 30-year period with the initial phase producing 20,000 bbls/d of crude bitumen and the second and third phases producing 30,000 bbls/d each, for a total production capacity of 80,000 bbls/d.

The proposed Project is located on Crown Land on the east side of the Athabasca River in Townships 076 and 077, Ranges 17 and 18, West of the Fourth Meridian (W4M), approximately 50 kilometres northwest of the Hamlet of Wandering River, Alberta.

Pilot Project Update

In October 2010, BlackPearl received regulatory approval for the construction, operation and reclamation of the Blackrod SAGD Pilot Project in the Lower Grand Rapids Formation. BlackPearl began operations of the Pilot Project in June 2011 and it was converted to SAGD mode in September 2011. The well remained on production until August 2015 when it was shut-in in order to allow steam to be re-allocated to a second pilot well pair.

In 2012, BlackPearl applied for and received approval to expand the pilot. In 2013, we drilled a second pilot well pair, two observations wells and modified the existing processing facilities. We commenced steam injection in the second well pair during the four quarter of 2013 and we converted the well pair to SAGD mode in March 2014. The objective of the second well pair is to continue to refine some of our operating strategies, including well start-up procedures, steam distribution and sand control methods.
